Every AC system makes water as it cools your house. That water is supposed to leave quietly through a drain line. A ceiling stain only shows up once something upstream of that line has already failed.

Start at the stain, then climb

A ceiling mark below an AC unit is the end of the water’s route, not its start. The water made four stops before it got there. The stain is proof of a problem, not the problem itself. Working backward from it is the fastest way to find the actual cause.

Insulation soaks first, quietly

Insulation tucked in the attic above most ceilings soaks up water long before any of it reaches drywall. By the time a stain finally shows up, that insulation has often been damp for days. Nobody upstairs ever knew.

The pan fills once it has nowhere else to send the water

Every air handler sits over a drain pan. It’s built to catch normal condensation and route it away through a drain line. The pan itself rarely fails on its own. It fills, then spills, only once something downstream stops draining properly.

Some pans also include a float switch. It’s built to cut power to the AC once water in the pan climbs past a safe level. When that switch works, it shuts the system down before anything spills. When it’s worn out, unplugged, or wired wrong, the pan keeps filling with nothing standing in the way.

Most overflows trace back to a clogged line

The condensate line that drains the pan is narrow. Months of warm, humid air passing through it lets algae build a film along the walls. Once that film blocks the passage, water has nowhere to go but back into the pan and over its edge.

The coil is doing exactly what it’s built to do

A vinegar rinse through the line keeps it from clogging

Running plain white vinegar through that same line every few months is a small habit worth a calendar reminder. It keeps the algae film from ever thickening enough to block the line.

Can I just reset the float switch and run the AC again?

You can, but the switch tripped for a reason. Reset it without clearing whatever's blocking the line, and it usually trips again within a day or two, often after more water has already spilled.

Does an overflow always mean the whole AC system is broken?

No. Most overflows trace back to one clogged line or one failed switch, not a failing unit. An HVAC tech can usually confirm that in a single visit.

What if there's no float switch on my unit at all?

Older systems and some window units skip the switch entirely. Without one, a clogged line has nothing stopping it from filling the pan and running straight over the edge.
